Last chance saloon…

July 1, 2009

all together now!Roll up, roll up (your sleeves..) and join us tomorrow, here at the SPL from 11am – 4pm, for a final chance to be involved in the Burns Banner! Stephen Raw and his circus of paints are arriving in town and we’re going to be mucking in in the name of Burns.

FAQ: What are you talking about? I didn’t know Burns wrote a poem called ‘Banner’…
A: He didn’t! The Burns Banner is a 12 x 10 metre banner featuring two verses of ‘A Man’s a Man For A’ That’. It is being created using around 400 individually painted letters.

Q: Who painted them?
A: Scots from all round the globe! Stephen has been in schools, community centres, hospitals and arts venues the length and breadth of the country, and we’ve had letters painted from Antartica, San Francisco and Dubai, as well as Eyemouth and Kirkwall

Q: How can I see the fruits of my labours?
A: The banner will be unveiled on Market Street, Edinburgh (not far from the SPL and opposite the Fruitmarket Gallery) on 6 August and will be in situ throughout the festival season. There’s also a Burns Banner website, where photographs of every artist involved can see their work displayed.

Q: This sounds amazing! How can I be involved?
A: We hoped you’d say just that! You can either come tomorrow, to the SPL between 11am & 4pm and get stuck in. Or, if you’re further afield, you can download the details and create your letter from the comfort of your own house.

Q: Do I need to bring paints and brushes?
A: No: all materials will be supplied. Just bring yourself and a colourful imagination…
